A Note from our Director and Editor-in-Chief: On the Launch of The Australian Kathak Company

The Australian Kathak Company is excited to announce its official launch.

Kathak carries centuries of knowledge — embodied in movement, pedagogy, lineage, and cultural memory. It is a form of extraordinary depth, much of whose richness exists beyond the stage: in the relationships between teacher and student, in the discipline of daily practice, in the histories and lineages that shape how artists move and create today.

The Australian Kathak Company was founded to bring this richness into dialogue with the present. Based in Melbourne, the platform connects the global Kathak community — engaging with practitioners, educators, and organisations whose work reflects depth, rigour, and genuine leadership in the form, and sharing that work with audiences both familiar and new.

As the platform grows, it will commission original work from artists, writers, and other practitioners, creating opportunities for performance, dialogue, and cultural engagement that reflect Kathak's evolving practice and enduring impact.

This is an ongoing conversation — one rooted in deep respect for the tradition and genuine curiosity about where it is headed. I am glad you are here for it.
